Extreme Heatwaves and Their Cause

In the United States, the summer of 2021 was equally as hot as the summer of 1936, a season dubbed ‘The 1936 Dust Bowl Summer’. In addition, the number of global wildfires between 2019 and 2020 has increased by nearly 10 000. Both of these statistics highlight the negative impacts climate change has on the earth’s environment.

Climate change can be described as the process in which the temperature of the earth’s atmosphere and oceans increase as a result of carbon dioxide buildup. Climate change results in a myriad of negative impacts, along with hot weather and increased wildfires. For instance, there are also changes in moisture, wind, and heat circulation patterns in the air.

Furthermore, extreme heat poses undesirable impacts in terms of a human’s health. The most prominent malady that is induced as a result of hot temperature is known as ‘heat stroke’, one of many heat stress conditions. It occurs when one’s body is no longer capable of regulating its temperature which can be a fatal issue. Moreover, hot air allows for the build-up of harmful air pollutants. As a result, the air citizens breathe is of much lesser quality.

There are many ways to take action and better prepare for climate change. One idea is to rely on active modes of transportation such as biking. These forms of transportation are favourable because they reduce air pollution and encourage physical activity.
