1) Tell us about your small business!
Just Jade Jewels (@justjadesjewels) is a small business with handmade resin jewelry such as earrings, rings, keychains, and necklaces that are dainty and minimal. There are options for those who have pierced ears and those who do not (clip ons).
2) How did you come up with your small business idea?
I never got my ears pierced and growing up it was really hard to find affordable, cute, and trendy earrings that I would wear. I decided to create my own clip on stud earrings in my bedroom one day and I figured that other people would probably like my creations as well so I decided to create more and more and it snowballed into a huge passion project!
3) What are some struggles that you face during the COVID-19 pandemic? How have you overcome those?
There have been a lot of setbacks that have happened during COVID-19. Aside from the mental strain of being at home all the time, I was laid off from my job and rejected from nursing school. A lot of the nursing schools I wanted to apply to were also not open for applicants because of the pandemic. For a while, I played the victim and kept feeling bad about myself but I decided to stop doing so and create the life I wanted. I figure I really enjoy running a business and that I should take the opportunities that are right in front of me instead of trying to force a path that may not be for me. Rejection is redirection has become my motto.
4) If you are a student, do you find it difficult to balance school and business-owning? If you have a full-time/part-time job (that is not this job), do you find it difficult to balance work and business-owning?
When I was taking a semester off to apply to nursing schools, I had a lot of time on my hands to work on my business. I was still taking some courses at my community college on the side but they weren't as rigorous. Now that I'm transferring from my community college for four years, I know that the workload will be a lot more intense so I would not have as much time to work on my business. It's all about balance but so far, I don't feel too much stress doing it because it doesn't feel like work and I love doing it!
5) If you could re-start this process from the beginning, what do you wish you could have done differently?
I would definitely have done more research and started promoting my business before I launched the website. I started off on etsy and then transitioned into making my own shopify website and it's a whole new ballgame. I also definitely wish I posted on tik tok back in March 2020 for my small business with no shame because of how saturated the content is like now.
6) What advice can you give to future small business owners?
My biggest advice is to be patient and stay consistent. Keep posting on your instagram, tik tok, and pinterest even if you aren't seeing any results. Prioritize posting quality content that will solve someone's problem instead of doing what every small business is doing on tik tok too. Everything you post on instagram and tik tok, you should definitely repost to pinterest too.
