As of Saturday Nov. 7, Joe Biden is elected 46th president of the United States. Months of anticipation and suspense has culminated into a historic victory with Biden and Kamala Harris, the vice president-elect, succeeding the Trump and Pence administration.
For the past week, the Associated Press reported the voting outcomes of each state, each result signaling which candidate was one step closer to the White House. During this election, the swing states - states that could either be of Republican or Democrat majority - were especially crucial to both parties. When Biden reached 264 electoral votes, the world waited with bated breath for one of the swing states, Nevada, to reveal which party the majority of its population favored. In the end, Pennsylvania was the state that ultimately tipped the odds in favor of Biden, bringing him to 284 electoral votes.
This triumph marks a significant turning point for the Democrats who have endured much chaos under the Trump administration. However, in terms of the legislative branch of the government, while the number of Democrats surpassed the number of Republicans in the House of Representatives, they fell short of possessing the majority in the Senate. Only time will tell what will become of the Senate and the House of Representatives and how it will affect Biden’s power as president.
For now, the world can only look forward as the United States prepares for a new presidency, which includes waiting for the Electoral College to convene on Dec. 14 to certify the results from each state. However, with Biden exceeding Trump in the popular vote and major networks already projecting that Biden will win, it seems as if a new United States president is set in stone.
American citizens and people all around the world have already been very vocal about their reactions to the election. In fact, Twitter users have all congregated on the popular social media platform to tweet hashtags, such as #bidenharris and #PresidentElectJoe, many of which have made the trending page.
While today is a monumental moment for the Democrats, it is also significant to the American people. For months and months on end, the country has been divided, its polarizing views continuing to increase tensions amongst its citizens. A new administration means a fresh start, especially for the marginalized communities which have suffered for far too long from the endless conflicts. In fact, Harris, a woman of Black and Asian descent, being the vice president-elect of the United States is already taking a step in the right direction towards eliminating prejudice and oppression of minorities and embracing diversity.
Even after the election, there will always be divisions within the American society. However, there will also be room to grow and improve as a nation. In Biden’s words, this is a time for the country “to unite and to heal.” Only then can the United States live up to its name.
