It was officially declared on April 4, 2021 that 38 year-old Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu, former parliament speaker, has been elected as the new President of Kosovo. She is the second female leader in the post-war period of the Balkan Nation and will serve in office for five years.
Kosovo is a self-declared independent country in Europe. Many members of the United Nations (UN) recognized the country’s declaration of independence from Serbia in 2008. However, Kosovo’s induction into the UN was not done immediately due to the irrecognition of their declaration by Serbia, Russia, and other European Union (EU) members.
The former President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, resigned on November 5, 2020 due to charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Osmani-Sadriu temporarily replaced him as acting President from November to late March.
The parliament held a two day session election. Osmani-Sadriu took office with 71 out of 120 votes, making her one of the youngest heads of states in the world. Although the position is considered ceremonial, she plays a leading role in foreign policy and acts as the commander of the armed forces of Kosovo.
