Mental Health Project - Mental Wellness Month

The month of January is Mental Wellness Month and there’s no better way to start the year than to take care of your own mental wellbeing. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as the “state of one being in which the individual realizes about his or her own capabilities in life, being able to cope with the normal stresses in life and being able to work productively and fruitfully.”

Mental health and wellness affects all our daily aspects in life — whether it be emotional, physical, social, or even spiritual. It helps us with the way we think, act, and feel. Thus, it is important for us to improve our mental wellness in any way possible.

Mental Wellness Month of January originated from the idea that humans must have a certain period of time allocated specifically for prioritizing one’s mental health and wellness. WHO recognizes the importance of Mental Wellness and decided to dedicate the first month of the year to mental wellness.

There are a number of ways we can take care of ourselves better and improve our mental wellness, one of which is taking breaks. Although it sounds cliché, taking breaks every now and then has been proven to improve productivity and mental wellbeing. If you feel like your life is chaotic and you spend most of your time rushing from one thing to the next, it can be overwhelming for both your mind and body. Always ensure that you take some time to yourself throughout the day. Taking breaks can be simple and fun — you can do something you enjoy, such as meditating or watching your favorite movie.

Another well-known tip to improve mental wellness is to develop a habit of exercising. It has been scientifically proven that exercise can improve a person’s mentality. Regular exercise can create more oxytocin in the body, which helps with warding off negative emotions, such as depression. A simple 15-minute walk can help keep one’s mind and soul together.

Investing a few minutes each day in improving mental wellbeing can boost resilience, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being.
