Terry Fox - A Canadian Legend
Terry Fox made a legacy throughout his life that will continue to exist.
He was a Canadian activist who was an inspiration for his battle through cancer.
He used the Marathon of Hope event, which is a race in Canada to raise millions of dollars for cancer research.
His cancer journey started in 1977 when he had to get an amputation of one of his legs.
He started to learn to run using an artificial leg and completed a marathon in 1979
He used his determination and skill to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.
He continued to run even though he was not gaining much recognition or money for cancer research.
He was forced to stop in 1980 due to chest pains when he discovered that his cancer spread to his lungs.
By that time be ran 3339 miles and raised 1.7 million Canadian dollars.
The next year the Marathon of Hope raised $24 million in donations
Unfortunately, after multiple treatments, he died on June 28, 1981.
Before his death, he was given recognition through multiple awards including the youngest Companion of the Order of Canada and twice named Canadian of the Year.
